FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Generic Mine Inductions

1. What is the difference between a Metalliferous mine and a Coal mine?
Coal mines extract coal.  Metalliferous mines extract various hard rock minerals like: gold, copper, silver, zinc, and lead etc.

2. What does the term GMI stand for?
Generic Mine Induction.

3. Do I need to do the Coal GMI Course or Metalliferous GMI Course?

If you are going to work on a coal mine you may need to complete the induction course -COURSE IN GENERIC INDUCTION TO COAL MINING (Core) and the Underground Elective. Nearly all coal mines in Queensland require a GMI ‘Coal Passport’ to be produced before you are allowed on site.

If you are going to work on a metalliferous mine you may need to complete the induction course - COURSE IN GENERIC INDUCTION TO METALLIFEROUS MINING (Core, Underground). Not all Metalliferous Mines in Queensland require you to complete a GMI in Metalliferous Mining. However, some mines have made it a pre-requisite before you can enter their mine site.  You should check with the mine you are going to be working at to determine if a "GMI passport’ is a pre-requisite to work on their mine site.

Note: A ‘Coal Passport’ will not be accepted on a Metalliferous Mine and a ‘Metalliferous Passport’ will not be accepted on a coal mine. You must have a current qualification (ie: a current ‘passport’) for the particular mine you will be working on. Some people do hold both ‘passports’ because they have successfully completed the assessments for each induction course to obtain those qualifications.

As of 1 February 2009 we will be running a combined Coal & Metalliferous core induction .  This means that if you successfully complete the course you will obtain both generic induction passports from the same course.  Ring our office on 47289866 to enquire.

4. How do I get a job in the mines? Will the GMI Course get me one?
We only provide training. For recruitment opportunities we recommend trying the numerous recruitment companies in Townsville and surrounding areas or logging onto the websites of the various mining companies. We cannot guarantee anyone will get a job by just doing our GMI course. However, many recruitment agencies do find it advantageous for you to have successfully completed a particular GMI if you are interested in working on a mine site, especially those mines that require it as a pre-requisite for entry to their sites. It is also very good grounding for any new starter who has not worked or been exposed to a mine site before.

5. Do I need to do the Respond to Fire & Initial Response to Fire Units?
Some mines will require you to have these qualifications as a pre-requisite to work on their site. However, if you are not sure we recommend you contact the mine you will be working at to clarify if you require these extra competencies. The new competencies codes are as follows:
Respond to Fire – PUADEFEO201A: Refer to the Training Calendar.
Perform Initial Response First Aid – MNMG204A: Refer to the Training Calendar.

6. What will it cost me?
The costs depend on the course/and combination of courses that you attend. It costs less to do the courses you require all in the one week. Doing them at separate times over weeks and months will be more expensive. Course fees are listed in the relevant Course Outlines.

7. Will I need to do the Core elective only or both the Core & Underground electives?
If you are going to be working on the surface only of a mine you will only need to complete the relevant 'Core' generic mine induction. If you will be working underground on a mine you will need to complete both the 'Core' & 'Underground' elective of the relevant GMI course.

If you already hold a current core passport you will only need to do the underground elective. However, be mindful that your underground qualification will always expire at the time your core qualification expires.
PLEASE NOTE: We do not offer the Underground Course in Coal Mining.

8. Can I book onto the Underground Course only?
You may only book onto the Underground Metalliferous Course if you hold a current Metalliferous Core Passport. You must present this passport when you book onto an Underground course.

9. What will I receive if I complete the GMI Course successfully?
Upon successful completion of the GMI Coal (Core) induction you will receive:
Statement of Completion
- Course in Generic Induction to Coal Mining (Core); and,
Statement of Attainment
- MNCC1006A Conduct Local Risk Assessment
- MNCG1013A Apply Initial Reponse First Aid

Statement of Completion
- Course in Generic Induction to Metalliferous Mining - Core
Statement of Attainment

If you do not receive your passport from Mining Industry Skills Centre within the month you can contact their Brisbane office on (07) 3872 8500.

10. How do I renew my passport when it expires?
You can do any of the following:
• Complete the full course again
• Attend a Refresher Course – Refresher courses for the Metalliferous & Coal Core courses will be held regulary - refer to our Training Calendar. There is no refresher for the Underground Metalliferous course.
